RECOMMENDED FIREFIGHTER TRAINING

The following list of classes/courses should help you in your career as a firefighter, weather it be volunteer or paid.  This list, in order of precedence, will give you the necessary knowledge to complete the job right, the first time, every time!!  You must remember though, that YOU are the ones that make the difference when it counts, so learn as much as possible, and remember that this list could be a stepping stone or the plateau; that depends on you!!

1.  Firefighter I

2.   Vehicle Rescue Technician

3.   Firefighter Survival

4.   Rescue I, or Rope Rescue I & II, depending upon location

5.   Rapid Intervention Teams

6.   Engine Company Operations

7.   Firefighter II

8.   Truck Company Operations

9.   Large Area Team Search

10.  Emergency Vehicle Operator’s Course (every 3 years)

11. Pump Operations I

12.   Emergency Medical Technician

13.  Confined Space Rescue (yearly refresher)

14.   Rescue II or Rope Rescue III & IV, depending upon location

15.  Water Rescue Phase I

16. Pump Operations II

17. Fire Officer I

18. Fire Instructor I

Some of the courses are only 16 hours, some are 160 hours.  With time and dedication, you could be up to Firefighter II in about 2 years, and the rest in another 3-4 years.  Although it sounds like a lot of time, remember that when you are not in class learning, you are out on the street getting experience, which is just as important!!  A key point when starting out in the Fire Service is to be a follower, yes, a follower!  You can learn a lot from others who have been in your shoes before.  This is important because to become a good leader, you have to have been a good follower.  You can take all the courses in the world and have training for everything, but if you cannot lead others and assist them with learning, then there is no reason to start at all!!!
