Why a Volunteer Fire Service?
Although the Township has over the years assumed a large portion of the costs of the fire service, the work is still done by volunteers. It has been estimated that to replace the volunteer service with a paid service of the same quality and professionalism would cost more than ten times as much as it does now, plus there would be a cost of millions of dollars needed for start up.
While it may surprise many members of the community to learn that their fire protection is provided by 50volunteers who receive no compensation at all, this is the norm, not the exception. Approximately 97% of the fire companies in the Commonwealth are volunteer. This is an excellent system which saves taxpayers untold millions of dollars, while providing fire protection unequaled in the world.
It is critical to continue to attract volunteers. To date, the Company has kept up its strength despite increasing pressure on volunteers from their jobs (often outside the Township) and their families. An additional difficulty is the fact that many of them, with young families, cannot afford to live in the community where they grew up and which they serve so selflessly.
The Company will always need new volunteers and, in this the members of community can help. It is important to find and attract from the immediate community, new volunteers, young and old, who are willing to share in this important work.
