The Upper Gwynedd Fire Department serves as the primary fire and rescue services provider for Upper Gwynedd Township. Our township is just over 8.0 square miles, and is bounded by Valley Forge Road to the West, Morris Road to the South, Swedesford Road to the East, and  Whites Road/Welsh Road to the North.  Within the boundries of Upper Gwynedd Township lies the Borough of North Wales, which is surrounded on all sides by the township.

Lastly, we provide mutual aid assistance to some of our neighboring fire departments for fire and rescue services. In some cases this even includes first alarm assignments due to the proximity of our stations to the other townships.

For the purposes of alarm responses, Upper Gwynedd is subdivided into 22 "area boxes". Since Upper Gwynedd is municipality #51 in Montgomery County, these are referred to as boxes 51-1 through 51-39. There are some number's not used as they are reserved for expansion.  In addition, there are approximately 35 other boxes assigned, based upon target hazard as follows:

51-40's - Industrial
51-50's - School's/Daycare's
51-60's-  Nursing home/Group Home
51-70's - Single Family Dwellings
51-80's - Townhome/Apartment Complex's

Each of these boxes has a unique listing of resources predetermined for dispatch purposes. Each box has a minimum of 3 alarms loaded and many other resources pre-defined in the CAD system at the Montgomery County Emergency Operations Center.

Many times, people ask why are there so many fire trucks responding or why is another fire company here, and the reason is that most fire company's, including Upper Gwynedd, utilize what is known as a "box system".  The box system ensure's that the closest appropriate fire apparatus respond to an emergency in the most timely manner.
